Super Bowl LI: Falcons Vs The World

Ryan vs Brady. Photo Credit: Forbes

The Super Bowl matchup is set. It’s the mighty New England Patriots vs……Who?

The Atlanta Falcons. Yes, the same Atlanta Falcons that steamrolled two potential Super Bowl contenders in the Seattle Seahawks and Green Bay Packers. They made two former Super Bowl MVP’s (Russell Wilson and Aaron Rodgers) look like novices.

They have the number one scoring offense in league and their young defense is silently evolving into a championship caliber unit.

Who are they really?

No disrespect to Atlanta but this city is not known for winning titles. Atlanta has five current professional sports team in its beautiful city ( Braves, Hawks, Dream, Falcons and United FC.)

The Braves were a juggernaut in the 1990s, appearing in the World Series three times. In 1995, they finally reached the mountain top defeating the Cleveland Indians in six games. It remains the only championship that Atlanta has ever won.

The Hawks? They recently got good. They made the Eastern Conference Finals in 2015 but were swept by Lebron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers. They made the playoffs the following year but were bounced out of the semifinals by who else the Cleveland Cavaliers. They are currently the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference with a record of 26-19 entering today.

Both the Dream and United FC are recently new franchises and there isn’t a lot of history there.

Anyway back to the Falcons. As an avid Jets fan, it pains me to say that they are up against Tom Brady who is considered to be one of the best quarterbacks of all time. This could go bad or really bad for the Falcons especially his supposed beef with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. Brady is salivating at the chance of Goodell handing him the Super Bowl trophy if they win.

I will root for the Falcons in the Super Bowl.  Who are the Falcons is a question that has yet to be answered but we will find out the answer on February 5th.

Lets hope the Falcons can channel their inner New York Giants and Matt Ryan can channel their inner Eli Manning. In this crazy world, the Patriots do not need to win another title.

No More Wait ‘Til Next Year: The Cubs Are For Real

The Cubs are four wins away from making it to the World Series. Something I will never thought I would say.

Last night, the Cubs did the impossible and eliminated the San Francisco Giants. Since it was an even year, everyone expected the Giants to eliminate the Cubs and eventually win the World Series.

There was no talk of the curse in the Cubs dugout as manager Joe Maddon brilliantly led his team to its second straight National League Championship appearance.

The question on every Cubs fans mind is: When will the curse strike?

The Cubs were swept by the Mets last October and were dominated in every offensive category. They became the first losing team to have never led in a game in the series. It was the work of the billy goat.

Fast forward to a year and the Cubs have a better offense and better pitching.

This will be the end of the curse. These Cubs are for real.

Tim Duncan: There Will Never Be Another

San Antonio Spurs v Los Angeles Lakers

Tim Duncan came from the sunny shores of the U.S Virgin Islands to a future Hall of Famer.

Yesterday, Duncan announced his retirement from the NBA after 19 seasons. He is a 5x NBA champion and was a 3x NBA Finals MVP. In addition, he was a 2x NBA MVP and the 1998 NBA Rookie of the Year.

He joins John Salley as the only NBA players in history to win an NBA championship in three different decades.

Perhaps the only flaw in Duncan’s game is his free throw shooting. During his career, he shot only 69% from the stripe.

There wasn’t no retirement press conference. No social media postings. Just a press release.

Just a simple goodbye.

Yes, Duncan was quiet. He didn’t really speak to the media. He didn’t get into any trouble with the law.

He is a winner.

Man, the Hall of Fame in 2021 will be stacked.

Leati Joseph Anoaʻi aka Roman Reigns has the best tattoo in all of WWE, but what does it mean?

According to a WWE interview, he states that it represents justice, strength, authority and a true reflection of a competitor. If you look closely, you will find a small turtle on his inner wrist dedicated to his daughter Joelle. The turtle represents protection for his daughter as in the Samoan culture a turtle symbolizes family, wellness, longevity and peace.

In case you were wondering, it took 17 hours to get the tattoo done.

The former WWE World Heavyweight champion has Japanese lettering down his spine.

In an interview with WWE, Rollins revealed that the tattoo represents the Japanese samurai code called the Bushidō. The letters stand for respect, integrity, courage, honor, compassion, honesty and loyalty.

The inspiration behind the tattoo? Rollins was watching The Last Samurai one night and inspired him to get the tattoo.

Many are comparing it to The Rock’s Brahma bull tattoo. Actually, the tattoo represents his zodiac sign Taurus. He also has his grandfathers initials tatted on his right fingers.

Mark Calloway aka The Undertaker has a number of tattoos on his body. Perhaps the best known tattoo is his B.S.K Pride on his stomach. The initials B.S.K stands for Bone Street Krew.

For those who are not familiar with wrestling, The Bone Street Krew was a collection of Superstars brought together in the 1990s by The Deadman to counter Shawn Michaels’ Kliq. The group consisted of The Undertaker, Yokozuna, Rikishi, Savio Vega, Brian Adams, Paul Bearer, and Papa Shango (later known as The Godfather.)

It is not hard to miss the “Beast Incarnate” ginormous sword tattoo on his chest.

Turns out there is a funny story behind this tattoo. According to Lesnar’s 2011 autobiography, he got the sword tattoo while drunk.

It serves as a constant reminder of all the tough times Lesnar has gone through.

Muhammad Ali: A Master of Life

Very few people leave their mark on this planet. One of the few was Muhammad Ali.

His legendary fights with Joe Frazier, Sonny Liston, George Foreman will forever live on in boxing lore. He was the one of the few that talked the talk and walked the walk.

The greatest of all time was just that. Not just great in the ring, but he was the master of life.

Behind the loud mouth bravado and epic quotes was a man who helped inspired millions around the world.

While others were arguing about the Vietnam War, Ali took it a step forward and refused to be apart of the unpopular war. The country failed Ali but Ali never failed the country.

Ali was more than a boxer. He was an inspiration to everyone in the world.

Now he joins Joe Frazier and I’m sure that they are renewing their epic rivalry in heaven.

Rest in Peace champ.

Miguel Cabrera: The Forgotten Superstar?

Detroit Tigers star Miguel Cabrera could be considered to be this generations version of Babe Ruth.

So, how come no one is talking about him this season?

In a season dominated by Bryce Harper, Clayton Kershaw, Mike Trout and Jake Arrieta, Cabrera is quietly having a great season. Entering today, he is batting .304 with 12 home runs and 37 RBIs and is on pace for yet another MVP caliber season.

In the month of May, Cabrera was laser focused at the plate, hitting .337 with 7 homers. Last season was an “off-year,”winning the AL batting title for the fourth time in five years. He was limited to 119 games due to a grade 3 calf strain.

With the younger crop of players in the league, Cabrera could be shoved into the background, but don’t count him out just yet.

He is still one of the best players in the league. Don’t be surprised if he wins the MVP award this year.

After Epic Collapse, Kevin Durant Determined To Leave OKC

It was the perfect scenario: The Oklahoma City Thunder was up 3-1 in the Western Conference Finals against the defending NBA Champions Golden State Warriors.

After a huge win in Game Five of the series, the Thunder was riding high. There wasn’t any talk of free agent to be Kevin Durant leaving the Thunder during the offseason.

Then yesterday happened. The Thunder are the first team since the 1981 Philadelphia 76ers to blow a 3-1 series lead in a Conference Finals. Many are left wondering if the Thunder can recover from this historic collapse.

The Thunder were down by seven with under a minute remaining during Game 7. For some inexplicable reason, Durant launched a three with 20 seconds left in the shot clock. When the rebound was made, Thunder players simply turned into statues and let NBA MVP Steph Curry shoot a wide open 3-pointer, killing little hope that the Thunder had to reach the NBA Finals.

In that bizarre moment, Durant already made his decision to leave OKC. He recently was on the record saying that he havn’t thought about his upcoming free agency.

It would be hard for Durant to come back to the Thunder after this historic collapse. There was a time that Durant was the man in Oklahoma City before Russell Westbrook came in and started to take all the shots.

Could Durant leave because of Russell Westbrook? It could be a possibility.

Could Durant join Wall? (Photo by Ned Dishman/NBAE via Getty Images)

There are a lot of destinations the former Texas Longhorn can go. Washington, Los Angeles, New York, Dallas to name a few.

In the event that he leaves Oklahoma City, he could go to the Washington Wizards. Durant was born and raised in Washington DC and will reunite with former Thunder head coach Scott Brooks. He and point guard John Wall could make an impressive tandem.

It would be interesting to see what Durant does this offseason but I believe that he already made up his mind.

Jose Bautista vs The Texas Rangers

The feud between the Texas Rangers and Toronto Blue Jays star outfielder Jose Bautista is just getting started.

For those who were under a rock yesterday, Bautista was on the receiving end of a mean right hook from Rangers second baseman Rougned Odor. To those that miss the video, you can check it out below.

What a punch.

So what caused this fracas?

Bautista was hit by a pitch in the top of the inning by Matt Bush. The next batter grounded into a routine double play where Bautista made a hard slide towards Odor. The next thing you know, Odor’s fist connected with Bautista’s face.

This all began last October when Bautista did an epic bat flip during Game Five of the American League Division Series.

If both of these teams make it to the playoffs, get your popcorn ready.

Chicago Cubs: Too Good To Be True?

The Chicago Cubs are the best team in all of baseball.

Currently, the Cubs are 25-6 and are nine games ahead of the Pittsburgh Pirates. From the domination of 2015 National League Cy Young Award winner Jake Arrieta to the emergence of Kris Bryant, the Cubs are riding high.

Could it be too good to be true?

Although they are doing great, they are still the same franchise that haven’t won a championship since 1908. Many Cubs fans have seen this story before.

Remember in 2003, when the Cubs won the division title and went on to the NLCS? Yeah,  we all know how that went down.

It is still early to tell if the Cubs will make it to the World Series, but be wary Cubs fans.

The curse of the billy goat still lives.
